About Observe New Mexico Elections
Observe New Mexico Elections, funded by The Carter Center, is a nonpartisan election observation effort designed to increase trust and transparency in elections. Observers are trained about relevant laws, procedures, and safeguards in New Mexico’s electoral process and verify that those procedures are followed consistently. Nonpartisan election observers represent all voters, do not interfere in the election process, and report what they see. Observers’ findings from across the state will ultimately be aggregated and shared with the public.
Position Description for Municipal Election Observation Coordinator
Observe New Mexico Elections, a project funded by The Carter Center, is seeking a detail-oriented person to support recruitment, train, and support nonpartisan election observers in one of the following municipalities: Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Farmington, Silver City, Hobbs, Las Vegas, Gallup, Las Cruces, Alamogordo, Espanola. The coordinator will also observe a set of centralized election activities in their municipality. Duties will include:
- Recruit, hire, prepare and support registered voters to be nonpartisan election observers to observe at least 50% of early voting locations and at least 50% of Election Day polling locations
- Observe and report on centralized election processes in the relevant municipality, including voting machine testing (logic and accuracy testing), poll worker training, early voting, Election Day voting and the county canvass.
- Attend 2-3 in-person trainings in Albuquerque, facilitate 2 in-person trainings in your county for observers, attend online trainings for relevant electoral processes.

Job Type: Contract
Pay: $2000 flat fee (August 1- November 30), to be paid in two deliverables-based installments, plus travel stipends (of up to $1200) for observation and in-person training.
Schedule:
- Flexible schedule
- Attend 2-3 in person meetings in ABQ (August, early October, early November), attend 4-5 virtual trainings, co-lead 1-2 in-person trainings in your town, recruit observers and submit appropriate paperwork, personally conduct up to 6 observations of election processes and voting.
Experience and abilities:
- Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint): comfortable
- Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides): comfortable
- Access to the Internet
- Access to a smartphone (voice, text, Internet)
- Familiarity with electoral processes in New Mexico (preferred)
Ability to Commute:
- Residence in New Mexico and voter registration in the county in which you seek to work (Required)
- Work location is one of the following cities: Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Farmington, Silver City, Hobbs, Las Vegas, Gallup, Las Cruces, Alamogordo, Espanola.
